Most web authors do a sample 'local' publish to their own computers before publishing to a remote server.
Publishing locally in this way is much quicker than publishing remotely, and it allows one to see exactly what will happen when the site is published to the web.
Before you can publish your site to a server that will make it available on the web, you will need a login name and password to the
server. Your service provider will have to tell you what these are.
If you are publishing to a server at UNITEC, Glenda will tell you the magic key words! Once you know what these are, the process is straightforward:
1 In Explorer view, choose File/Publish web.
As soon as you have done this, you will see a dialogue box which asks you where you want to publish to:
If you have published anything before, you will see those addresses waiting for you to choose them again. If you haven't published before, click on Options
.
Before doing that, though, make sure that the 'Publish changed pages only" box is not selected.
2 You will then see the following:
If you are doing a local publish, you type in 'localhost'.
If you are doing a remote publish, you will have to enter the
URL of the server you are publishing to, and the directory you want to put your site into. If you are not sure what the address is, your service provider will give
you these details . If you are doing a practice remote publish at UNITEC, the location is 10.1.1.200/yourstudentlogin (eg 10.1.1.200/jacobg1).
3 You will then be asked for a login name and password. You will be given
these in class... just enter them and click OK.
4 If there is already a site published in that location - ie a site identified with your login name, - y ou will be asked if you want to replace it.
The answer is that you do, so choose the middle radio
button (this is exactly what you did when doing a local publish, so you should feel quite comfortable about it!).
5 And then you just sit back and wait.... it will take a bit of time, so go and get a cup of coffee!
