Win9x is a "network aware" operating system. That is to say, if you have a NIC (Network Interface C ard) fitted, and have installed the correct network software, it is capable of "seeing" other computers.

There are three major network "protocols" (a set of rules by which computers communicate with each other):

  1. IPX - used on Novell networks. A fast and reliable protocol.  Requires a dedicated "file server" (computer which acts as the central controlling station).
  2. NetBEUI - used by Microsoft Windows computers to communicate with each other, and used mainly on small home or office networks which do not have a file server.
  3. TCP/IP - used on the Internet. Stands for "Transfer Control Protocol/Internet P rococol".  Fast becoming the protocol of choice in all networks, including Novell networks.
