Win9x is what is known as a "multi tasking" operating system. This means that it can run more than one application simultaneously.  In the accompanying graphic, the user actually has five applications running in the background - File Explorer, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Fusion and Paint Shop Pro.

To switch to any of these applications is easy.  Simply click its icon in the taskbar.
