Although by this time you are probably conversant with most of Word7's basic functions, you may find the pages above useful as reminders.

WeŽd suggest you work your way through them, and do every exercise they contain. There is nothing like getting the basics right!

This course assumes you already are somewhat familiar with Word. However, here are some absolute beginner tips, which you MUST know before you continue:

NEVER:

  • hit ENTER to go to a new line. Word will do this for you automatically when you reach the end of the screen. Use the ENTER key only to create a new paragraph.
  • add spaces to centre text.
Use the centre button on the toolbar.
Use the TAB key to align columns of text

ALWAYS:

  • save your work at the BEGINNING of your session, not the end, since if you experience a power failure, or your computer crashes, you will not lose all your work.
  • Become familiar with the formatting tools on the toolbar to change font or to change formatting.

REMEMBER:

  • the UNDO tool on the toolbar.  And use it.
  • the scrollbar on the side of your document which allows you to move rapidly to different parts of your document.
  • the ZOOM tool on the toolbar which makes your text appear either smaller or larger to suit your preferences. 75% seems a good setting for most purposes.
  • the VIEW menu options. For most purposes, the "Page Layout" view seems a good choice.
